Khair al Deen Zarkali (d. 1410) records in his famed biographical work ‘Al-Alaam’ Volume 2:

Qazi Khan (000-592 H = 000-1196) Hassan bin Mansoor bin Abi al-Qasim Mahmood bin Abdul Aziz, Fakhr al-Deen, known as Qazi Khan al-Awzjandi al-Farghani.
Amongst the top Hanafi jurists, he authored: al-Fataway, in three volumes, al-Amali, al-Waqe’at, al-Muhadher, Sharh al-Ziadat, Sharh al-Jame’a al-Saghir in two volumes, Sharh adab al-Qagha lelkhusaf and etc.
(he was named) al-Awzjandi, attributed to Awzjand, (around Asfahan near Farghana).

The Hanafi work ‘Al Jawahir al Maziya fi Tabaqat al-Hanafiya’ by Yusuf Ibn Abi al-Wafa includes Qazi Khan amongst the Tabaqat (generations) of great Hanafi scholars.

Al-Hassan bin Mansoor bin Abi al-Qasim Mahmood bin Abdulaziz al-Awzjandi al-Farghani, the exalted Imam, known as Qazi Khan, the Imam Fakharuddin.
He attained knowledge under the pupillage of Imam ibn Ishaq Ibrahim bin Ismail bin Abi Nasr al-Safari al-Ansari, Imam Noor al-Deen Abi al-Hassan Ali bin Abdulaziz al-Merghinani, Nedham al-Deen Abi Ishaq Ibrahim bin Ali al-Merghinani and was also taught by Shams al-Aema Muhammad bin Abdulsatar al-Kurdi.
Abu al-Mahasin Mahmood al-Haseri Sheikh ul-Islam commented: ‘He is our master, the judge, the Imam, the teacher, the proud of nation, the pillar of the religion, the successor of the Salaf, the Mufti of the East, died on a Monday night on the 15th of Ramadhan in the year 592.’
(He was) buried near the seven judges, he wrote al-Fataway in four big volumes and Sharh al-Jame’a al-Saghir in two big volumes.

Ibn Qatlubagha al-Hanafi in his book ‘Taj al-Tarajim fi Tabaqat al-Hanafiya’ collated information with regards to all Hanafi scholars. In the preface of the book he states:

“I saw in it (the book) written details set out under the biographies of the Hanafi Imams, so I liked to add to each (scholar’s) name.”

He has included Imam Qazi Khan amongst the great Hanafi scholars and appraises him as follows:

Al-Hassan bin Mansour bin Abi al-Qasim Mahmood bin Abdulaziz al-Awzjandi al-Farghani, known as Qazi Khan Fakhr al-Deen, he obtained knowledge under the pupillage of Abi Ishaq Ibrahim bin Ismail bin Abi Nasr al-Safari, Dhahir al-Deen abi al-Hassan Ali bin Abdulaziz al-Merghinabi and others.

He authorde al-Fatawey in four volumes, Sharh al-Jame’a al-Saghir, Sharh al-Ziadat, Sharh Adab al-Qadhi lelkhasaf.

Died at the mid night of Ramadhan, in the year 592.

Allamah Ibn Emaad Hanbali recorded the following words in his authority work ‘Shadharat Al-Dahab’ Volume4 page 308

الأمام فخر الدينخ قاضي خان الحسن بن منصور بن محمود بن عبد العزيز الأوزجندي الإمام ظهر الدين المرغيناني وإبراهيم بن اسمعيل الصغار وتفقه عليه شمس الأئمة الكردري وله الفتاوي وشرح الجامع الصغير قاله ابن كمال باشا في طبقاته

Imam Fakhr al-Deen Qazi Khan al-Hassan bin Mansur bin Mahmood bin Abdulaziz al-Awzjandi, (his teachers) Imam Dhahr al-Deen al-Merghinani, Ibrahim bin Ismail al-Saghar, he learnt jurisprudence from Shams al-A’imah al-Kurdi, he authored the books “al-Fatawi”, “Sharh al-jame’a al-Saghir”, that is what Kamal Pasha mentioned in his book ‘Tabaqat’.

Yusuf Alyan Sarkis in his popular biographical work ‘Mu’ajam al-Matbu’aat al-Arabiyah’ records about Imam Qazi Khan:

Qazi Khan (592) (Imam) Fakhr al-Deen Abu al-Mahasin al-Hassan bin Mansur abi al-Qasim Mahmood bin Abdulaziz al-Awzjandi al-Farghani al-Hanafi, known as Qazi Khan the author of ‘al-Fatawi’ which is very popular in his madhab.

He was an exalted Imam and a deep sea (of knowledge) diving deep in the precision meanings, he obtained knowledge from Imam Shams al-A’ema Muhammad bin Abdulsatar al-Kurdi, Hassan ibn Ali al-Merghinani, Burhan al-Deen al-Kabir bin Mara, Mahmood bin Abdulaziz al-Awzjandi the grand father of Qazi Khan and others.

His ‘Fatwa’ (written) in four volumes was authenticated by the majority of jurists.

In “Fatawa Qazi Khan” (Hanafi jurisprudence); most of the popular problems which are needed by the nation are mentioned, he arranged it on known chapters/books among the scholars.
