Sheikh Ayman Saleh said in the introduction of a book ‘Nusub al-Raya’ by Al-Zail’ai, Volume 1 page 36:

الإمام محمد بن الحسن الشيباني ، المتوفي سنة 189 ، كان كثير الحديث ، ترجمته في بلوغ الأماني والآثار و الموطأ والحجة على أهل المدية ، مما يقضي له بالبراعة في الحديث ، رغم أنوف الجاهلين بمقدر العظيم

“Imam Muhammad bin al-Hassan al-Shaybani, died in year 189, he narrated a lot of hadith, his biography exists in Bulugh al-Aman, al-Athar, al-Muwata, al-Huja ala ahl al-Madina, which shows that he is skillful in hadith and shows his great status in defiance of those who opposed him”

We read in ‘Tarikh Baghdad’ by Allamah al-Khatib al-Baghdadi:

محمد بن الحسن بن فرقد أبو عبد الله الشيباني مولاهم صاحب أبى حنيفة وامام أهل الراى أصله دمشقي من أهل قرية تسمى حرستا قدم أبوه العراق فولد محمد بواسط ونشا بالكوفة وسمع العلم بها من أبى حنيفة ومسعر بن كدام وسفيان الثوري وعمر بن ذر ومالك بن مغول وكتب أيضا عن مالك بن أنس وأبى عمرو الأوزاعي وزمعة بن صالح وبكير بن عامر وأبى يوسف القاضي وسكن بغداد وحدث بها فروى عنه محمد بن إدريس الشافعي وأبو سليمان الجوزجاني وهشام بن عبيد الله الرازي وأبو عبيد القاسم بن سلام وإسماعيل بن توبة وعلى بن مسلم الطوسي وغيرهم وكان الرشيد ولاه القضاة وخرج معه في سفره إلى خراسان فمات بالري ودفن بها

“Muhammad bin al-Hassan bin Farqad Abu Abdullah al-Shaybani, the companion of Abu Hanifa and the Imam of the citizen of al-Ray (city), his origin is from a village of called Harista, his father moved to Iraq and Muhammad was born in Waset (city), and grew up in Kufa, he obtained knowledge from Abu Hanifa, Mesar bin Kadam, Sufian al-Thouri, Amr bin Dar, Malik bin Maghoul, and he wrote from Malik bin Anas, Abi Amro al-Awzai, Zum’a bin Saleh, Bakir bin Amer and Abu Yusuf al-Qazi, he lived in Baghdad and narrated hadith there, it is narrated from him by Muhammad bin Edris al-Shafeei, Abu Sulaiman al-Jawzjani, Hisham bin Ubaidllah al-Razi, Abu Ubaidllah al-Qasim bin Salam, Ismail bin Tawba, Ali bin Muslim al-Tusi and others. Al-Rashied appointed him as a judge and he traveled with him to Khurasan and died in al-Ray and was buried there.”

Ibn Qatlubagha al-Hanafi in his book ‘Taj al-Tarajim fi Tabaqat al-Hanafiya’ collected information of all Hanafi scholars. In the preface of the book he states:

“I saw in it (the book) written the biographies of Hanafi Imams, so I liked to add to each (scholar’s) name.”

He recorded the following about Imam Shaybani in Volume 1 page 18:

وهو الذي نشر علم أبي حنيفة فيمن نشره

“He is the one who spread the knowledge of Abu Hanifa among the people

Imam Ibn Hajar Asqalani records in ‘Tajil al-Manfia’ Volume 1 page 362:

وقال عبد الله بن علي بن المديني عن أبيه صدوق

“Abdullah bin Ali al-Madini narrated from his father that he is Seduq”

We further read the views of Imam Darqutni regarding Imam Shaybani:

وقال الدارقطني لا يترك

Al-Darqutni said: “One should not abandon him”

Mahmood al-Ghybati al-Hanafi records in ‘Maghani al-Akhyar’ Volume 6 page 54:

توفى الكسائى ومحمد بن الحسن فى يوم واحد، فقال الناس: دفن اليوم اللغة والفقه

Al-Kesai and Muhammad bin al-Hassan died on the same day, so the people said: ‘Today the Arabic language and Juristprudence have been buried’

Al-Dahabi said in ‘Mizan al-Etidal’ Volume 3 page 513:

وكان من بحور العلم والفقه

“He was as a sea of knowledge and jurisprudence”
